What To Wear in Scotland: Packing List & 20 Things To Bring

Scotland is a beautiful destination which lots of variety. Packing for Scotland is not an easy thing to do as the weather varies incredibly, from hours to hour and day to day.

The sun does shine in Scotland, however, it is very changeable. This guide lists what to wear in Scotland and there is a packing list of things to bring.

What you need to pack depends on where you will go in Scotland and whether it is summer, spring, autumn or winter. The type of shoes will depend on what activities you plan on doing.

Also, the type of jacket you will require will depend on what part of Scotland you will go to. Keep reading to find out what to pack for a trip to Scotland.

Weather

The weather is a popular topic to talk about in Scotland. Scots love analysing the weather. Scotland has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Late Spring to early autumn is the best and most popular time to visit Scotland. The rainfall at this time of year is lower, there is more chance of higher temperatures and sunny days.

In autumn, winter and early spring there is more rain, longer nights and duller days. The weather may not be as ideal, but if you are prepared you will still have a fantastic time.

When you come to Scotland it is important to be prepared, as you can experience four seasons in one day. Pack for the time of year on your trip but also bring sunscreen and extra layers for colder weather.

Scotland is at a high latitude, with similar latitudes to areas of Canada and Alaska. The weather is not as extreme as in Canada and Alaska, but the weather conditions can change unexpectedly.

In the summer the average temperatures are around 20 degrees Celsius, in the winter the temperature is an average of zero degrees Celsius. Although, the temperature can feel warmer in the summer and much colder in the winter.

There is less rainfall on the east coast of Scotland, with Dundee known as the sunniest city in Scotland. On the west coast, there are more cloudy days and more rainfall annually.

Pack Layers

The weather in Scotland can change very quickly. In the space of 24 hours there can be hail, snow, rain and sun. Also, there can be wind from the north pole hitting the country hard, which makes the predicted temperatures feel a lot colder.

So, always pack layers. When the weather is cool, pack an outer, waterproof shell jacket, a tick and warm inner layer and a thinner inner layer.

Expect Rain

Even if your trip to Scotland is for a few days, I would say expect rain even if it is not forecasted. If you are planning on hiking make sure to pack a waterproof jacket, waterproof boots and waterproof trousers. If you are planning on visiting a city, always take an umbrella just in case.

Expect Wind

Even when you are relaxing in your accommodation, you can hear the wind rattling against the windows. Wind can be the most irritating thing when you are camping.

As mentioned above, the winds can be coming from the north pole and can be cold, making the temperature feel a lot less than what it is. I’m sure you will catch many windswept photographs during your time here. Make sure to bring wind-proof and wind-blocking items to your Scotland packing list.

If you are planning on hiking up mountains make sure to check the forecast. As you increase altitude the wind speed can increase dramatically. I have seen the forecast for the predicted 10 miles per hour wind at the bottom of the hill, then 70+ miles per hour predicted at the summit.

What To Wear Depends on Where you are Going

In Scotland, the weather can vary depending on your location. Near the borders and central belt the temperatures tend to be warmer than the Highlands and Islands. The cities are usually more sheltered and warmer. However, the coast can attract mass amounts of wind.

If you wish to go hiking, it will be colder at the higher altitude, with likely more winds. Meanwhile, at the base of the walks, in the glens and forest, hikers will be sheltered from the wind.

What to Wear in Cities

Edinburgh and Glasgow are the two biggest cities in Scotland. Usually, the temperatures feel warmer in the cities and there is shelter from the wind. It is good to wear cosy casual clothing while exploring the cities. Also, you can wear comfortable shoes wandering around the city.

In the summer months of June, July and August, you might get away with wearing shorts and t-shirt. However, during any other months I would bring a jacket of some sort or bring plenty of layers.

In the winter, you will need a big winter jacket, scarf, gloves and hat. Oh, and remember always to pack an umbrella. Basically, you can wear what you like. The clothing style is primarily smart casual.

Spring in the cities: Temperature averages 7 degrees Celsius, and average rainfall is 53 millimetres. People often wear a light waterproof jacket, trousers and waterproof shoes.

Summer in the cities: Temperature average 14 degrees Celsius, average rainfall is 71 millimetres. People often wear shorts, trousers, dresses, skirts, t-shirts, sandals and trainers. The sun does not set until 9pm or 10pm at night, however, the temperature does drop after 6pm.

Autumn in the cities: Temperature average is 8 degrees Celsius, average rainfall is 96 millimetres. People often wear jumpers, light waterproof jacket, trousers, jeans, trainers or boots, sometimes gloves and hat are required. Bring thinner woollen layers like cashmere so you have more luggage space.

Winter in the cities: The temperature average is 3 degrees Celsius, the average rainfall is 65 millimetres. People often wear plenty of layers, jumpers, gloves, hats, scarves, cosy coats, trousers, fluffy socks, warm tights under clothes, boots or waterproof hiking shoes.

What to Wear on a Night Out

If you are planning on going out for drinks or meals, people wear a variety of footwear from trainers, boots to high heels. There are a lot of cobbled stone paths in Edinburgh, so, bear that in mind for when you have to walk between places.

There is not a particular dress code for going on nights out in Scotland. You will find that some groups of people will dress casually, while there will be people celebrating birthdays or on hen parties who will be dressed up. If you are going to a gig, just dress casually or any way you like.

What To Wear For Hiking and Doing Outdoor Activties

The main thing to remember is to make sure you are cosy and comfy. The weather is so unpredictable so make sure to pack extra clothing and spares.

If you are planning on doing hiking or outdoor activities make sure to pack warmer clothing, bring sturdy foot wear, pack base layers, bring waterproofs and thick socks. Also, it is important to have a suitable backpack which is going to be comfy to wear.

Spring in the Highlands: The average temperature is 7 degrees Celsius, and the average rainfall is 53 millimetres. People often wear a light waterproof jacket, trousers and waterproof shoes.

Summer in the Highlands: The temperatures average is 14 degrees Celsius, and the average rainfall is 71 millimetres. People often wear shorts, trousers, t-shirts, trainers and hiking shoes.

Autumn in the Highlands: The average temperature average is 8 degrees Celsius, average rainfall is 96 millimetres. People often wear jumpers, light waterproof jacket, trousers, jeans, trainers or boots, sometimes gloves and hat are required.

Winter in the Highlands: Temperature average is 3 degrees Celsius. You do not need to have the fanciest winter gear. People often wear plenty of layers, jumpers, gloves, hats, scarfs, cosy waterproof jackets, trousers, fluffy socks, boots or waterproof hiking shoes.

Packing List

Sturdy Luggage

Make sure to bring a bag that is sturdy and durable. Also, make sure your suitcase has a sturdy wheel as wheeling a suitcase over the cobblestone streets can really damage your case.

A lot of accommodations in Scotland are old buildings that do not have elevators, therefore, a bag that you can carry may be required.

If you are hiking or exploring the Highlands think about getting a durable suitable backpack that will fit everything you need in it. Also, you will need to being a waterproof protector or dry bags to make sure nothing gets wet from the rain.

Socks

If you will to hike or are completing any long distance walk, make sure to bring good thick socks to prevent blisters. Also, in the winter, your feet can get extremely cold!

I would have a fluffy cost pair of socks for sleeping at night or to wear with your shoes or slippers when you are relaxing in you accommodation. Even waking round the city in the winter, for example the Winter Wonderland and the Christmas markets in Edinburgh, my feet felt like ice blocks. Therefore, make sure to bring thick cosy socks.

Hiking Boots

When you are in the Highlands, Islands and rural towns you will always see people wearing sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. You will need to find something comfortable, with a stiff sole, preferably waterproof.

Make sure you have worn these shoes and they are comfortable before going on long hikes as your feet might hurt.

Pyjamas

It is important to pack nightwear or pyjamas for your trip to Scotland. It can get cold at night, especially in the winter.

I would always try and wrap up warm at night just in case your accommodation does not provide extra blankets etc. Even in the summer, the old buildings can remain cold on the inside.

Toiletries

If you have not packed toiletries or have realised you have forgotten something, there are many places to get toiletries in towns and cities in Scotland. There are pharmacy-specific shops such as Boots and Superdrug which sell all of your daily necessities.

Large supermarket brands such as Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons will sell toiletries. Moreover, small shops that are located in more rural areas such as Spar and Premier will have a limited selection of toiletries.

If you are mostly spending your trip in the rural parts of Scotland I would recommend stalking up on toiletries t the main towns and cities as the options become more limited and items are more pricey.

Additional Clothing Packing List

  • Hat, Scarf and Gloves: Again it might be cold! You can go to Primark which will sell the inexpensive option if you forget.
  • Thin Base Layer: with the slightest bit of exercise, either in the city or hiking in the country, the temperature can feel like it changes very quickly. Thermals are good if you are going anywhere in the highlands.
  • Hiking Trousers: something water resistant would be ideal
  • Jumpers: not too bulky so you still have space in your luggage
  • Coat/Jacket: consider something waterproof
  • Warm Leggings: important for layering

Packing List: Other Items

  • Electrical Adapter: UK adapter can be purchased online, I recommend getting an international adapter so you do not need to buy a new one for every country you visit.
  • Umbrella: a lightweight travel umbrella.
  • Reusable water bottle: you can drink tap water in Scotland, there are filling stations dotted around the country, also, you can fill up in your accommodation or bars and restaurants can fill up for you. This is a good way to stay hydrated and is good for the environment.
  • Binoculars: perfect for nature lovers, who also, admire the long distance views.
  • Midge repellent: Midges are out in full force in the Highlands of Scotland during the summer months. They are worse during sunrise and sunset. There are sprays, hats, nets and creams available to deter the mini beasts.
  • Camping Gear: if you decide to camping this will be required
  • Flashlight: required if you are staying in a hostel or if you are camping
  • Gaiters: if you intend on taking a long walk anywhere with long grasses or wet.
  • Battery Pack: if you are going on long hikes or using your phone to take hundreds of photos, the battery will die quickly.
  • Sunglasses: the sun in Scotland is pretty low, so you will need sunglasses when you are driving or walking
  • Maps of Scotland: Ordnance Survey maps
  • Packing Cubes
  • Drybags
  • Small Bag
  • Camera
  • Travel Insurance

What is the best time of year to visit Scotland?

Summer is the most popular time to visit Scotland. The weather in the summer is the best, temperatures are higher and there is less chance of rain. Also, the days are much longer, sunrise can be as early as 04:45 am in the summer and sunset is at 10pm.

Meanwhile, in the winter the days are much shorter, with only 8 and a half hours of sunlight a day. The temperatures can hit zero degrees Celcius, and there is more chance of rain, hail, snow, sleet. So far doing outdoor activities and hiking, I would recommend going in the summer months.

However, hiking is a whole new experience in the winter. If you are prepared for the weather and shorter days, hiking can be a magical experience. In the cities, there are great festivals and markets for Christmas

What clothing is Scotland famous for?

Scotland is famous for kilt wear. Kilts are only worn on special occasions such as weddings and graduations. Also, you will see performances where men are wearing kilts. Most people in Scotland wear casual clothing on a daily basis.

What Should I Pack for 10 days in Scotland?

Make sure to pack a coast or jacket, boots, shoes, sweatshirts, jumpers, baselayers, jeans, trousers and a dressier outfit. If you are going in the winter make sure to pack extra layers and warm winter clothes, as well as hat, scarve and gloves.

Moreover, pack a plug converter, camera, flashlight, reusable water bottle, binoculars, midge repellent, dry bags, suitable backpacks and an umbrella.

Final Note

Great weather is not one of Scotland’s many virtues. However, if you are prepared the bad weather should not affect you. This post has stated what temperatures to expect throughout the year in Scotland.

This post has listed the things you need to bring for a trip to Scotland. What you will need to pack depends on what activities you plan to do and where you plan to go. As always, a city break is different from a hiking holiday.

Do not worry if you forget something, there are plenty of shops on the High Streets in the main towns and cities.  For hiking gear look out for Mountain Warehouse or Go Outdoors store.
